Military English UK Courses
The Military English
Courses we currently offer are:
MEC1 NATO STANAG 6001SLP 2222
English
This is an upper-intermediate course for officers who require certification of
their proficiency in Military English. Students can join the course at any
point, but we recommend a period of 10 weeks’ study to take students from
intermediate level to NATO STANAG 6001 SLP 2222.
This skills-based course is intensive, dynamic, and practical. It will give
students the confidence to use English immediately and effectively in an
international military environment.
We always tailor the language and skills content of the course to meet the
precise needs of each group and ensure that any specific problem areas are
targeted and practised.
Whilst students are aiming to sit and pass the NATO STANAG 6001 SLP 2222 test,
the course does not focus solely on exam preparation, but seeks to activate
officers’ English to the extent that they can interoperate successfully and
confidently with international counterparts.
The table below gives an overview of typical course content areas.

MED1 NATO STANAG 6001 SLP 3333 English
This is an advanced course for officers who require
certification of their proficiency in Military English. Students can join the
course at any point, but we recommend a period of 10 weeks’ study to take
students from upper-intermediate level to NATO STANAG SLP 3333.
The methodology adopted will be communicative and will aim at activating
officers’ passive knowledge of English and at developing professional
interoperational fluency. Activities will include individual, pair and group
work with regular feedback and individual tutorial sessions.
A feature of the course is the ongoing active recycling and consolidation of
language and vocabulary in a military context.
Officers will find themselves well-equipped to sit the NATO STANAG 6001 SLP
3333 English test, as practice is integrated into the course from day one.
However, it should be noted that trainers will not ‘teach to the test’, but
will focus on all round language improvement and on enhancing each student’s
level of communicative fluency to that expected of staff officers in an
international environment.

MEP1 NATO & UN Mission English
This course
is aimed at junior Staff Officers and NCOs about to be posted overseas on OOTW,
MFO and other NATO/UN international missions. It combines a Military English
language course with cultural awareness training.
Course emphasis is firmly on practical communication skills such as listening
and speaking.
Daily group tutorials on topics of immediate relevance and situational role
plays are used to activate and improve spoken communication, and include:
The Strategic Corporal
Embedded Media
Military Observers
Role of Interpreters
Law of Armed Conflict
Soldiers and Civilians/NGOs
4th Generation Warfare
Issues in Regional Conflict
Students will learn
how to ask clear questions and give easily-understood replies, as well as how
to reformulate and simplify their language for optimal communication. Typical
scenario practice will include communicating with international colleagues of
different ranks in a variety of everyday situations on and off base,
interacting with civilians (local population, journalists, contractors) whilst
on duty, on patrol, at checkpoints, and in emergency situations.
Students will develop the functional language skills necessary to communicate
with tact and appropriacy, and will learn how to deal with situations
involving linguistic misinterpretation. They will practise the language of
negotiation and diplomacy in scenarios involving dealing with the local
population, NGO representatives, and international civilian personnel.
Also, the importance of cultural awareness to the success of an international
mission cannot be underestimated. Although training in the area is often
regarded as touchy-feely, an appreciation and understanding of another culture
is a powerful asset where regular interaction with the inhabitants of a
foreign country is required. To this end, students will consider the
following:
Cultural stereotyping
Communicating across cultures
Direct & indirect communication
Non-verbal communication
Limiting linguistic/cultural misinterpretation
Building common ground
Culture shock
Students will emerge
with a critical appreciation of the different behaviour, attitudes and values
of people from a different culture. They will also be in a position to
evaluate how their own culture impacts on other cultures; how they see
themselves; how they see others and how others see them.
We can also tailor the content of this course to a particular country, thereby
allowing group members to focus on a single culture around which course
materials would be centred.

military operations, click here to read articles on the topic from
NATO
Review and
Soldier Magazine.

We never adopt a
one-course-fits-all approach, but start by conducting a pre-training
individual or group Needs Analysis which can be done online or over the phone.
It comprises a detailed questionnaire about previous learning, short and
long-term objectives, your desired study period and language focus, and the
specialist topic content and vocabulary you require. It allows us to design an
initial language course that we hope will not only meet your precise
requirements, but exceed your expectations.
We also conduct a full Language Audit to assess each participant’s current
knowledge. This takes the form of a pre-training written and oral assessment
to ensure that your training with us starts the minute you walk into the
training room.
