Intercultural Communication Skills
Where speaker and listener come from different cultures, accurately interpreting what has been said is often fraught with difficulty. The cultural filter of the listener influences what is heard and places an interpretation on the words that defines the message received. This process can easily distort the intended message and interfere with comprehension. An appreciation of inter-cultural communication skills can contribute enormously to the success of any business.
The importance of such skills to the success of any international business cannot be underestimated as an appreciation and understanding of another culture is a powerful asset which can often give a company the edge in winning major overseas contracts.
Delaso offers a two-day intensive workshop for British managers and company employees who require enhanced intercultural competence skills to work and compete successfully at the international level. These are all the more important where managers do not speak the language of the country with which their company is about to do business.
At the workshop planning stage, we carefully talk through both client and participant needs and decide whether a global or a single country workshop focus would best suit.
Key topics include:
Cultural stereotyping
Communicating across cultures
Direct & indirect communication
The 4 stages of cultural awareness
Body language, distance and eye contact
Cultural behaviour codes
Tolerating linguistic ambiguity
Group/individualistic cultures
Limiting linguistic misinterpretation
Limiting cultural misinterpretation
Power distance, hierarchy and status
Building common ground
Conflict resolution
Perceptions of time
Recognising culture shock
We aim to equip participants with a critical appreciation of the different behaviour, attitudes and values of people from a different culture. We also train participants to evaluate how their own culture impacts on other cultures; how they see themselves; how they see others and how others see them. Upon course completion, participants will be more culturally tolerant and in a position to understand...
that situational ethics often prevail
why they feel hostile towards an individual/individuals
that 1400 hrs can mean 1430 hrs, 1500 hrs or 1600 hrs
that people often say yes when they really mean no.
why some people won’t give a straight answer
that, in some countries, having to wait is normal
why some people tell you what they think you want to hear
Participants will leave the workshop with...
an enhanced ability to communicate and work effectively with colleagues from other national and business cultures
the skills to reduce intercultural misunderstandings
an awareness of how they are perceived by people from other cultures
Our trainers will use a variety of activities including presentations, group work, role play scenarios, and question and answer sessions. All are seasoned language and business training professionals who, themselves, have lived and worked in a number of different cultures and countries worldwide and who are in a position to offer first hand advice and guidance on a wide range of intercultural communication issues. They won’t just talk about case studies lifted from handbooks, but will share personal insights with you and provide concrete examples of good and not-so-good practice they have experienced across the globe.
